Bringing your baby home is one of the most meaningful seasons of your life, it’s quiet, emotional, and beautifully fleeting.
Your in-home newborn photography session is designed to capture exactly that. No stiff posing. No pressure. Just your family, as you are, in the place that matters most.
And what you wear plays a bigger role than you might think.
The right wardrobe doesn’t just look beautiful, it helps create those soft, natural, timeless images you’ll come back to for years.
Why What You Wear Matters in Newborn Photography
In lifestyle newborn photography, the focus is always on connection. Your baby in your arms, the way your toddler leans into you, the quiet in-between moments.
Clothing should support that, not distract from it.
As I always say to my families across Ireland and those travelling here for destination sessions:
- The goal is timeless over trendy
- Softness over structure
- Connection over perfection
Busy patterns, logos, or bold colours can pull attention away from what actually matters – your family.
Start with a Soft, Neutral Colour Palette
If you take one thing from this guide, let it be this:
neutrals will always work beautifully.
Think:
- Creams, whites, and soft beige
- Warm greys and gentle browns
- Olive greens and dusty pinks and blues
Neutral tones:
- Reflect light beautifully in your home
- Complement natural interiors
- Keep the focus on your baby and connection
Neutral, earthy tones are consistently recommended because they create that clean, timeless feel in newborn images.
But, I also love a pop of colour to pull everything together. Be that a red cardigan, or a dusty blue shirt. These can work really beautifully if done intentionally! If you’d like to introduce colour, keep it soft and minimal one or two tones at most.
Dress for Your Home, Not Just the Camera
One of the biggest advantages of in-home newborn photography is that your images are deeply personal.
Your wardrobe should feel like it belongs in your space.
Before your session, take a quick look at:
- Your walls and furniture tones
- The rooms with the best natural light
- Your overall home aesthetic
Then choose outfits that blend, not compete.
This is what creates that effortless, editorial look where everything feels cohesive without trying too hard.
What Should Mum Wear?
This is the one I get asked most, and honestly, it matters.
You’ve just had a baby. You want to feel comfortable, but also like yourself.
The sweet spot is:
- Flowy dresses or relaxed silhouettes
- Soft fabrics like cotton, linen, or knit
- Neutral tones that flatter your skin
Long sleeves or loose fits can feel more comfortable postpartum, but equally, simple pieces that allow for skin-to-skin moments can be incredibly powerful and emotive in photos.
Avoid anything tight, restrictive, or overly structured—you want to be able to move, cuddle, and relax.
I have a beautiful, curated client wardrobe that you are so welcome to use. Full of pieces that have been chosen for how beautifully they photograph and also for how flattering they are.
What Should Dad Wear?
Keep it simple. Always.
- Neutral t-shirts, henleys, or soft knits
- An open shirt over a t-shirt, nothing too formal
- Chinos or relaxed trousers
- Barefoot or socks works beautifully at home
The aim is a relaxed, lived-in feel, not overly styled or formal.
Stiff shirts or heavy layering can feel out of place in a natural, in-home setting.
What Should Your Newborn Wear?
Less really is more here. I have so many pieces in my client wardrobe to dress newborns in which you are so welcome to borrow from. If you would prefer to dress from your own wardrobe, these are my recommendations.
The most beautiful newborn images often come from:
- A simple neutral babygrow or vest
- A soft swaddle
- Or just your baby, as they are
Soft, breathable fabrics like cotton or wool keep baby comfortable and photograph beautifully.
Avoid:
- Busy patterns
- Logos or graphics
- Stiff or fussy outfits
- Dresses / Dungarees
And don’t worry about “outfits” at all, some of the most timeless images are the simplest.
Dressing Siblings (Without the Stress)
If you have older children, the goal is coordination, not matching. My client wardrobe also caters for siblings up to the age of 7 and I have so many beautiful pieces I would love to share with you. My general guidance on sibling clothing is to;
- Stick to the same neutral palette
- Keep outfits simple and comfortable
- Avoid characters, logos, or bright colours
If they feel good in what they’re wearing, the session will be smoother and that shows in your photos.
Texture, Layers & Movement
This is where your images really come to life.
Think:
- Linen, cotton, soft knits
- Light layering (cardigans, oversized shirts)
- Flowing fabrics that move naturally
Texture adds depth without overwhelming the image and gives that luxury, editorial feel so many of my clients love.
Comfort Is Everything
Your newborn session is calm, slow, and baby-led.
Your clothing should reflect that.
- Choose pieces you can sit, move, and relax in
- Dress in layers (homes are kept warm for baby)
- Prioritise comfort over styling
Because when you feel comfortable, you look it and that’s what makes the biggest difference in your images.
